Dry ice — carbon dioxide, solid — is classified as dangerous goods under UN 1845. It is used extensively as a refrigerant for perishable goods, medical samples, and temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals shipped by air. Because it sublimates directly from a solid to a gas, it presents a specific hazard: the release of carbon dioxide gas can displace oxygen in enclosed spaces, including aircraft cargo holds.
