Significant Changes – 67th Edition IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (2026)
One change that will significantly impact all passengers is the recommendations that have been introduced regarding the use and charging of powerbanks and spare batteries in the cabin.
The recommendations are as a direct consequence of the Air Busan aircraft fire that occurred on the 28th January at Gimhae International Airport.
The full text from the 2026 IATA DGR reads as follows:
2.3.3.2.2 Spare batteries, including power banks should:
(a) not be charged using inseat/inflight power during all phases of flight;
(b) not be used to charge or power other portable electronic devices during taxi, take off and landing;
(c) not be placed in cabin baggage loaded in the overhead storage locker; and
(d) be placed in cabin baggage under the seat in front, or other designated storage location, such as the seat back pocket.
The good news, passengers can still use powerbanks to charge their phones (with a few exceptions), apart from during taxi, take off and landing.
These are sensible recommendations given the extent of the Air Busan fire, which is still under investigation but linked to a faulty powerbank in the overhead storage locker.
