It was an honour to be invited to the IFALPA Dangerous Goods Committee meeting in Mclean, Virginia.
From lithium batteries and undeclared/misdeclared dangerous goods to e-commerce purchases and energy storage devices carried onboard, the way dangerous goods enter the aviation system is changing, and so are the challenges of keeping commercial air transport safe.
Meeting in McLean, Virginia, the IFALPA Dangerous Goods Committee, chaired by Captain Timo Lempiäinen (FPA), is addressing these emerging risks alongside longstanding safety concerns, with valuable expertise from the DG Safety Group and ULSE.
The Committee is also finalizing new IFALPA Positions covering e-commerce, PEDs in baggage on helicopter flights, counterfeit and sub-standard packaging, and dangerous goods training for rescue and firefighting personnel.
This work helps ensure the pilot perspective remains at the table as the risks related to the transport of dangerous goods evolve.
